    Boundary Lubrication or Thin Film Lubrication. When the load is so high and it is not to maintain a full oil film lubrication, Boundary lubrication establish, particularly at low relative speeds between the moving or sliding surfaces. The oil film thickness may be reduced to such a degree that metal to metal contact occurs between the moving.   This book focuses on boundary lubrication especially with solids and does not cover fluid lubrication in the hydrostatic, hydrodynamic and elastohydrodynamic regimes. Boundary lubrication occurs when there is a thin monolayer of lubricant covering a surface. The goal of a lubricant is to reduce surface interactions between the two bodies.

This chapter describes mechanisms of boundary lubrication and an overview of various types of lubricants and their properties.

The chapter first presents data showing the effect of environment and types of lubricants and their interaction with solid surfaces on boundary lubrication behavior. In boundary lubrication, especially, the bulk rheological properties and hydrodynamic effects of lubricating oil are less important to the friction and wear phenomena, and the load applied is carried almost entirely through the contact and deformation of the asperities of frictional surfaces and the lubricating surface films formed on them.Boundary lubrication (also called boundary film lubrication): The hydrodynamic effects are negligible.
