      The best books on mysticism come in two categories: books about Mysticism and books by Great Mystics. Obviously books about mysticism are scholarly erudite tomes trying to understand the meanings of mystical experiences, captured in prose and poet. MYSTICS, ENGLISH. The great flowering of English mysticism was in the 14th century, with such writers as Walter hilton, julian of norwich, Richard Rolle (see rolle de hampole, richard), and the nameless author of The cloud of unknowing. It was the full and final growth of a tradition of devotion and speculation that had begun soon after.

    This book is an exercise that I suspect really only can be appreciated in the context of Vatican II, when it was written. Merton focuses both on underlying truths that join religions and on the role of mystics and outsiders in pressing the edges of traditional dogma (or revealing its underlying truth)/5. This book introduces readers to the scholarly study of mysticism. The author explores both mystics' lives and writings using a case-study method centered on detailed examinations of six major Christian mystics: Thomas Merton, Bernard of Clairvaux, Hildegard of Bingen, Bonaventure, Meister Eckhart, and Evagrius Ponticus.
